Persistent bird activity was causing droppings, staining and damage to the airport signboard and its lighting system. APCO designed and installed a discreet bird proofing solution that protected the structure while preserving its visibility, appearance and future maintenance access.

The Challenge

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) approached APCO to address persistent bird activity affecting its prestigious “COCHIN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT” signboard. Bird droppings were affecting the appearance of the signboard and causing damage to the lights installed along its top. The project presented several challenges:
  • Difficult access: The signboard was located in a challenging area requiring specialized access equipment.
  • Visibility: The bird proofing system could not obstruct the visibility of the airport sign.
  • Maintenance access: Lights and other components needed to remain accessible for future maintenance.
  • Aesthetic requirements: The installation had to blend with the structure without compromising its appearance.

Our Solution

APCO developed a customized bird proofing solution based on the structure, access conditions and maintenance requirements. Following a detailed site assessment, our trained technicians accessed the signboard using a Manitou, while following the required safety procedures. APCO proposed and installed a high-quality, visually discreet bird proofing net across the signboard. To maintain future serviceability, specially designed zippers were incorporated at strategic locations. This allows maintenance personnel to access the lighting and other components without removing the bird proofing system. The result was a practical bird control solution that addressed the bird nuisance while maintaining the appearance and functionality of the signboard.
