Chemmanthitta Mahadeva Temple

The Challenge

Located near Kecheri in Thrissur district, Chemmanthitta Mahadeva Temple is an ancient temple of significant historical and cultural importance. It is recognized among the historic 108 Shiva temples in the region and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The temple is particularly known for its historic mural paintings and traditional architectural features, including laterite construction, lime plastering, a gopura gateway, and a traditional temple pond. Termite management at such a structure required far greater precision than conventional termite treatment. The key challenges included:
  • Laterite and lime-plastered construction: Treatment work had to be carefully planned and executed to avoid unnecessary impact on the historic structure.
  • Protection of mural paintings: The valuable mural paintings within the sanctum required the highest level of care throughout the treatment process.
  • Future termite risk: The nature of the laterite construction creates the possibility of secondary termite colony development, making continued inspection important.

Our Solution

APCO's termite management team developed a carefully planned treatment approach suited to the heritage structure. The work was carried out with precision to address termite activity while minimizing any impact on the temple's architectural elements and historic artwork. Special attention was given to areas surrounding the valuable mural paintings and other sensitive structural components. Rather than treating termite control as a one-time intervention, APCO also incorporated a periodic inspection and monitoring approach. This is particularly important for heritage structures where the possibility of future termite activity needs to be identified early and managed before it develops into a larger threat.

Heritage-Sensitive Treatment

The treatment approach was planned around the architectural characteristics and sensitivity of the historic structure.

Mural Protection

The preservation of the temple's priceless mural paintings remained a critical priority throughout the work.

Termite Risk Management

The treatment addressed the existing termite concern while recognizing the potential for future activity within the laterite structure.

Ongoing Monitoring

APCO will continue periodic inspection and monitoring to identify early signs of termite activity and support long-term protection.

APCO is proud to contribute its expertise to the protection of India's valuable heritage structures.

This project reflects our ability to provide specialized termite control and termite management solutions for sensitive, historic and architecturally significant properties, where treatment must balance pest protection with preservation.
